  • Please contact your section Scouter for information, Questions or request to add to this page can be sent to scouter.steve.r@gmail.com

3rd Kanata specific (Updated information)

Meeting Place:

  • Please get specific information from your section Scouter, please check your email box.

  • Many section scouters meet their youth at Sobeys at a designated time and then to walk them along Terry Fox to the float site

    • if you arrive late or come from the mall on the bus, come find the group at the 3rd Kanata float in the staging area.

    • We are in Position 15 along Terry Fox

    • Based on past parade experience it is suggested meeting between 9:15 and 9:30 (depending on how on time your group usually is) so you have at least 15 minutes to get to the float from Sobey's

    • All youth should be at the float site by 9:45. The parade begins at 10:00 sharp and we want everyone sitting and in place ready to go.

What to Wear

  • Dress for the weather: Beavers will be riding on a float and the Cubs and Scouts will be walking ahead. As the Beavers are sitting, they need to be warm as they won't have body movement to warm them up once we get going.

  • Youth and Scouters - to show we are Scouting members, whatever parts of the uniform can be worn over coats should be - Beaver hats, neckers, Cub and Scouts should wear their neckers.

Areas that need assistance

    • Parents and siblings (with a parent) are welcome to join the parade. Wear something festive if you have it (Santa hats, etc.) and be prepared to sing :).

Parade Route

The parade progresses up Castlefrank to Abbeyhill and then into the Hazeldean Mall parking lot.

We will need some assistance on the day of the parade.

  • The float will arrive at 8:45 and then needs to be prepped for the kids. We need a few people to help decorate and make the float safe for the youth riding.

  • We need parents to walk the parade route.

  • We will need people to walk beside the Beavers to make sure they are OK and sitting etc.

  • We need people in front of and behind the float to assist the driver with turns, and we need some people to walk ahead with the Scouts and Cubs

  • If you would like to make banners or signs for your youth to hold, that's great. We usually try to have enough antlers or Santa hats for most if not all of the kids to give them a Christmassy feel.

  • We are not permitted to hand out candy along the route but will have candy canes for our own kids which they will be given before they go home.

The gentleman who drives the float is named Hoppy and he has been our driver for over a decade. If you would like to get your youth to make him a little thank you from your section, I'm sure he'd love it.

Staging Area from the organizers (Information for those walking directly to the Float)

  • Our Position is TBD

  • PLEASE NOTE - the staging area may change. If so, you will be notified.

  • Parade staging will take place on the shoulder of the NORTH bound lane of Terry Fox Drive. Details will follow. Please pay attention to the staging instructions. The staging area will close to traffic at 08:30.

  • We are staging on the east and west shoulders of Terry Fox. Position numbers 1 to 40 will stage on the east shoulder. Positions 41 to 64 will stage on the west shoulder of Terry Fox. Position number 1 is at Terry Fox and Castlefrank. Number 40 is closest to Winchester. Position number 41 is at the Castlefrank end and position number 64 is closest to Winchester.

  • The middle of Terry Fox MUST remain clear to permit emergency vehicles to pass if required. Please keep this area clear.

  • There will be a police officer at each end of the staging area controlling access. Members of the Lions Club will also be stationed at the two ends to assist participants.

  • The signs identifying your parade position may be back from the shoulder of the road in the grassy area along Terry Fox as the shoulder is gravel and difficult to drive in wooden stakes. If we have trouble driving the stakes into the ground, look to the gravel shoulder where we will paint the position number.

General Information from the Parade Organizers

    • Drop off for participants is at Terry Fox and Winchester and Terry Fox and Castlefrank. (Note 3rd Kanata: As per the above, look for confirmation from your Scouters, usually we meet a Sobey's)

      1. Same as last year, we have permission to allow vehicles with parade participants to drive through the barrier on the west side of Terry Fox at Winchester and drive around the median on Terry Fox to the east side of the median to safely drop off parade participants. You must drive carefully and you must pay attention to the directions of the police and Lions members manning that area. Discharge your passengers only on the east side of the median when fully stopped. You cannot drive through the staging area. You cannot park in this area or in the staging area.

      2. Busses are for passengers/parade participants and bands only.

      • We will have two school buses operating from the Hazeldean Mall to the parade staging area. We ask that, if all possible, that you take your supplies to the parade drop off and leave the busses to passengers only, since the busses have limited capacity. The busses will not stop along the route from the mall to the parade staging area. The bus will be permitted to enter the staging area at Winchester and Terry Fox and proceed through the staging area dropping off participants before exiting the area and returning to the mall. The last bus will leave the mall at 9:30.
