As a member of Scouts Canada, we wear our uniform with pride when we are at our meetings, at ceremonies and out in the community. Our uniform is what lets the world know that we are 'Scouts'.
Each section in Scouting has its own unique, distinguishable look and design.
Beaver Scouts wear a brown vest and bucket hat with a tail.
Cub Scouts wear a grey long sleeve uniform.
Scouts (Troop) wear a green uniform shirt.
Venturer Scouts wear a navy blue uniform shirt.
Rover Scouts wear a red uniform shirt (the same as a Scouter).
All Scouting members are asked to purchase a Scouting uniform that will fit them for the duration of the years in the specific section. Example, Beavers are ages 5-7, so its recommended you go up at least one size larger so your child will hopefully be able to wear their uniform for their entire time in Scouting, without it being too big and bulky on them. If you aren't too sure on sizing, go to the ScoutShop.ca and reach out to them for guidance (as there are no more physical stores).
The Scout Shop has gone completely digital (no more physical stores), so that means you can shop anytime online at Scoutshop.ca. Beyond just Scouting items, if you want to learn more about hiking, camping and more, get your ideas and considering getting you gear from them.
Follow their Twitter account @ScoutShopCanada for the latest deals and sales.
Please use this helpful guide when looking to purchase what you need for your new Scout. If you are unsure about anything, always feel free to reach out to your Section Contact Scouter in 3rd Kanata, or ask the Scout Shop online.
When a new member is invested into 3rd Kanata (for the very first time), their Section may provide them with the following items* (i.e. your Scout group will provide these items to you - so there is no need to buy these):
Council Crest
Voyageur Council is 1 of 20 Councils within Scouts Canada and is located in Eastern Ontario hosting 7,000 members in over 100 Groups. This is our Council.
Area & group crest
3rd Kanata has its own unique crest to identify our Group from among the many in Kanata, in Ottawa and beyond.
Necker
Neckers are worn around Scouting members necks and their colours and designs identify which group and area they are from.
Section Woggle
Woggles (slider for Beavers) are used to hold the necker together at the front of the uniform.
Some sections may have additional items that are given as well, such as:
Beaver Tail for Beaver Scouts
BROW TAIL
Age before January 1st: 5 years, Senior KindergartenBLUE TAIL
Age before January 1st: 6 years, Grade 1WHITE TAIL
(Sept - Jan/Feb)Transforms into Northern Lights Tail
(Jan/Feb - end of year)Age before January 1st: 7 years, Grade 2As 3rd Kanata is providing the above items for the uniform, there are only a few more items you will need to purchase yourself from the Scout Shop online to complete your child's uniform. Please see the section below for what each section needs for their uniforms.
Some sections may decide to place a bulk order to minimize shipping costs. Please speak with a Scouter volunteer before ordering in case this is being arranged.
Remember: We highly recommend choosing a sizing of items slightly larger than your youths current size, this way it will last them throughout their years in each section. Invite family and friends to purchase these items as gifts to help make them even more special to your youth.
Beaver Vest
Beaver Hat
Remember, your Beaver Scout will be receiving badges, a 3rd Kanata necker and a woggle (slider) once invested into the colony, so there is nothing else officially you need to purchase for the uniform. But feel free to browse the Scout Shop and get other items that you want your youth to have.
Cub Jersey
The Cub Jersey is the only official item needed, but many Cub scouts also enjoy having a t-shirt to wear underneath as the Cub Jersey gets hot when doing physical activities.

HANDY TIP
If you are looking for a handy way to put on badges without sewing, consider purchasing ‘Badge Magic’. Cut to the size of the badge, stick one side on the badge and the other on the uniform and your badge is all set.
There are even versions pre-cut for each section's badges as well!
Scout Shirt
The Scout Shirt is the only official item needed. But many Scouts also enjoy having a t-shirt to wear underneath for more of the physical activities.
Scout Tech T-shirt
Venturer Shirt
The Venturer Shirt is the only official item needed. But many Scouts also enjoy having a t-shirt or Polo to wear when doing other activities that get very adventurous.
Tech Polo
Rovers Shirt
The Rovers & Scouters Shirt is the only official item needed. Other options are great for more active events.

GEAR UP
Many adventures in Scouting will be out and about, so consider having some key gear available, like:
A Day Pack: with a water bottle, flashlight, small first aid kit, spare socks, toque & mitts. Maybe even a small pack towel (as the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is not wrong).
A Ditty Bag: A cloth mesh bag that contains a mug, plate, bowl, knife, fork & spoon for meals when camping. Make sure all items are labeled with your name and can withstand the heat of things like Hot Coco, soup and tin-foil meals.
Ditty Bag / Mess Kit
These are all optional items, but are recommended by Scouters.
Campfire blanket
The campfire blanket, much like the Scouting uniform, is widely known as not only a warm blanket to bring to camp, but also a place to adorn the many event and experience crests collected throughout your Scouting adventures.
Depending on the camp or adventure, you will need different types of gear. In Scouting, we help to teach and understand the differences.
While 3rd Kanata Group provides things like Tents, tarps, ropes, stoves and other group shared items, there are personal items members will need to have personally. Things like backpacks, sleeping bag, matters, toiletries, clothing, ditty bag, etc...
Don't feel like you have to puchase everyting all at once for your youth. Look for opportunities to ask for items for Birthdays and other celebrations, to receive items as gifts, so that others can feel like they are helping to support your youth on their Scouting adventures. Take a look at these Kit Recommendations for ideas.
OVER THE YEARS
Good gear will help you through many adventures. Make sure to take time, consider your options and get the gear that will last. Ask other Scouting members or at local shops, like Bushtukah, for tips on what gear to get that might best fit your needs. Dressing in layers will be a valuable skill to learn and practice.
As you move up throughout your years in Scouting, consider keeping your uniform as is, when you finish a section. This means you will want to purchase new Outdoor Adventure Skills (OAS) badges to put onto your next section uniform. This way, your old uniform can be kept as a shining example of all your accomplishments, and your next level section uniform will look like its continuing the history.
