In Scouting, members are taught skills on how to use different tools and items and some of these are setup into what are known as "Scout Permits". There are four (4) permits that we currently use in 3rd Kanata Scouts group are (some restricted to certain age requirements):
🔥 Match & Fire Permit (Beaver+)
🔪 Knife Permit (Cub+)
♨️ Stove & Lantern Permit (Cub+)
🪓 Axe & Saw Permit (Scout+)
These permits are optional but are encouraged to complete as they are treated with more focus and structure than regular activities or badges. This is because once a youth has showcased and passed the requirements, they receive a printed Permit card which allows them to now operate the items, with Scouter approval, at specific Scouting activities like camps. (Optional Permit Pins are available to purchase on the ScoutShop.ca for those who have earned their permit).
Our goal is to teach the youth how to use these tools properly and safely, along with being able to use these at future Scouting events, like camps, where they will need to know how to light and cook over a fire, how to use a stove to cook their meal, or light a lantern for night.
Members who successfully pass the training and testing, will be issued their Permit, which going forward, they must keep on them when planning to use the noted tools/items at specific Scouting events. (This does not allow them to use them at home or elsewhere without approval from other guardians or organizers, but Scouting recognizes people being trained to a certain level of knowledge and trust before receiving their permit).
Parents/Guardians are invite to participate with their youth and support their learning and development with these tools.
This is why we are making the Permit Training Guides available here.
Permits are valid only at specific Scouting activities and at the discretion of directing Scouters/Group Commissioners/Camp Committee/etc... where applicable.
Not all Scouting groups recognize Scouting Permits and may require direct supervision at anytime of these item uses, regardless of permit. Always follow direction of local leads.
Permits do not authorise use of these items beyond Scouting. Parents/Guardians have final say for their youths usage.
Please note, these Permit Training Guides were created by Scouters and we appreciate all of those who helped make these.
Special thanks to Scouters: Paul Yung-Davies, Chuck Fraser,

In the most rare of curcumstances, sometimes warnings must be provided to those who are Permitted. Some sections/groups use a 'Corner Cut' as a way of tracking "warnings" on permits.
This means that if a warning is given to a permit holder by a Scouter, and it is sever enough to merit a warning (and not a complete permit revoke), then the permit will have a corner be cut from it. If all 4 corners of a permit are cut, the permit is revoked, destroyed; and the member will no longer have the permit qualification.
They will have to re-attempt permitting to be issued a new one.
