Founded by Lord Robert Baden-Powell (B.P.) in 1907, Scouting provides you with opportunities to participate in programs, events, activities, and projects that contribute to your growth as an active citizen. Through these initiatives, you will become an agent of positive change who inspires others to take action.

Getting Started in the Cub Pack

No matter if you are a first time member of Scouting, swimming up from Beavers or joining from another group, we are excited to have you join our pack.

Please check out the 'New to Scouting (Members)' webpage first, and then come on back here to continue learning more about our pack.

Timber Wolf Pack requests all youth wear the 'Cub Scout Uniform (Jersey)' as their primary uniform.
Any other shirts are optional and not required.
3rd Kanata Necker will be provided at Investiture (if youth is not already invested into 3rd Kanata Scouts)

If your looking for additional extra's to enhance your Cub Scout experience, we also recommend reading 'The Jungle Book' by Rudyard Kipling. Cub Scouts takes themes from this book, like the wolf pack, and the names of Scouters, named after characters in the book like: Akela, Bagheera, Baloo, Rikki-tikki-tavi and more.

Practice and learn the following

There are different traditions in Scouting and different groups do different variations. But some things are common across Scouting locally, countries and even the world. Don't worry about learning all of them right away, many will come over time.

But to start in Cubs in Scouts Canada, here are some things you will need to learn, practice and memorize:

CUB PROMISE

I promise to do my best,

To be true to myself,

To do my duty to my country;

To keep the law of the Wolf Cub Pack,

And to do a good turn for somebody every day.

CUB LAW

The Cub respects the old wolf,

The Cub respects him/herself.

Cub Salute | Cub Scout Sign | Scout Hand Shake

Cub Salute

Right hand, two fingers together and raised to the head above eyebrows.

Cub Sign

Raise pointer finger and middle finger to create V shape (like wolf ears / peace sign).

Scout Hand Shake

Always with your LEFT hand.

BP was told by an Ashanti Warrior Chief that
"In our land only the bravest of the brave shake hands with the left hand, because to do so we must drop our shields and our protection."

IMPORTANT: If you ever see a Scouter or leader doing this sign (or three fingers in the air - the Scout sign), it is a call for everyone to be quiet and listen up. By raising your Cub Scout sign, you are raising your ears, closing your mouth, standing still, and listening for direction.

The Grand Howl

The Grand Howl is the jungle ceremony you’ll use most often. Cubs salute their leader (Akela or any other invested leader) with the Grand Howl at the beginning and end of every meeting.

Each group may do a variation with or without flags or even a wolf head totem, but the symposium is all the same. This is the call of the pack. Consider watching this additional video where BP explains the Grand Howl.

Cub Years and Goals

Runner

(Age 8 / Grade 3)

Learn the Cub Scout Handshake and Salute.

Perform a Grand Howl.

Repeat the Cub Scout Motto, Law and Promise.

Participate in a Cub Scout's Own.

Do a good turn for somebody and discuss your good turn with the Lair.

TRACKER

(Age 9 / Grade 4)

Teach the Cub Scout Handshake and Salute to a Runner.

Demonstrate a Grand Howl to Runners.

Teach the Runners the Cub Scout Motto, Law and Promise.

Share a reflective piece in a Cub Scouts' Own, such as a peom or prayer.

Do a good turn for somebody and discuss your good turn with the Lair.

Howler

(Age 10 / Grade 5)

Tell the Runners a little about Baden-Powell.

Lead a Grand Howl.

Teach the Runners what the Cub Scout Motto, Law and Promise means.

Organize and lead a Cub Scout's Own with other Howlers.

Do a good turn for somebody and discuss your good turn with the Lair.

Consider persuing the Top Section Award: Seeonee Award

Seeonee Award (Pack Top Section Award)

As the capstone for each Section, youth are given the opportunity to challenge themselves to earn their Top Section Award during their final year in Scouting (3rd year / Howler in Cubs). This award is not a requirement for a youth to move on to the next Section; rather, the Top Section Award is a goal some youth may want to set up for themselves. If earned, they can then wear this award on their future Scouting uniforms as they grow through the Scouting movement.

There are specific requirements for the Seeonee award that include the completion of Outdoor Adventure Skill (OAS) badges and a Community Service project. Opening and Closing Ceremonies

We often do a modified Jungle Opening and Closing with our Grand Howl. Please review and consider printing this document to help practice at home the words and steps for our opening and closing ceremonies.

Scout Pack (ie: a Backpack)

We ask all Cubs, attend every meeting (unless otherwise specified in weekly Scoutstracker events) the following items packed in their "Scout Pack" so that they are Prepared:

Water bottle (filled) (don't forget to clean each week)
Flashlight / Headlamp (test prior to attending)
Extra batteries for flashlight/headlamp
Compass
Hand Sanitizer
Buff / Neck Gaiter / Facemask
2x Extra Plastic Bags
1x Large Garage Bag
Extra Socks (in a sealed ziplock bag)

OPTIONAL:

Emergency / First Aid Kit
Plastic Bag and Disposable Gloves (to pick up garbage)

NOTE: Don't forget to dress for the weather and be prepared for inclement weather. You may also need to pack things like indoor running shoes or other items depending on the adventure.

When it comes time for camp, each camp has different suggested packing lists. 3rd Kanata as a group provides things like tents, tarps, stoves and group level gear. Personal items like sleeping bags, mats, backpacks, ditty bags, clothing, etc... must be brought by youth.
Gear and items do not need to be purchased exclusively though the Scoutshop.ca website. You can pickup gear from many different companies. Take a look at the 'Members' section for possible companies and available discounts/kickback options.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

Be Prepared. Check the weather, dress for the time of day and the weather. The Founder of Scouts is Lord Baden Powell and his initials 'B.P.' also stand for the Scout Motto which is: "Be Prepared".
Dress In Layers. Use the Layering Guide link for guidance.
Always wear your Necker. Your necker is the minimum part of your Uniform that you need to wear to all Scouting events.

Wolf Pups White Necker

A new Cub in our pack is given a white necker as a symbol of their clean beginning as a Wolf Pup (swimming up from beavers or new to the pack).

Through pack adventures and doing a good turn for someone every day (good deed), their necker will change to grey (like by doing dusting or cleaning). As they are invested (aka. Investiture) we will then award to them their 3rd Kanata grey necker. This is their official symbol of being apart of the Pack /3rd Kanata Scouting Group / Global Scouting Movement. They will now be a full fledge grey wolf and have proven themselves ready to truly be apart of the pack (we call this Investiture).

Note: The necker must get dirty, so doing cleaning as a 'good deed' for someone is a great way to get it dirty. They will then return the dirty necker and receive their 3rd Kanata necker. If a member already has their 3rd Kanata Necker, they will wear the white one overtop of it for a time.

Lair Composters (2023) ♻️

Our Lair Composters are our promise to the world, that we will be good Global Citizens and Do Our Best. Each week, a different Cub will take home a Lair Composter as it rotates throughout the pack. Each Cub that is in charge of a composter each week must tend to it all week and bring it with them to the following meeting.

If a cub wishes to use the contents for their own home gardens, they can empty and restart the process as we do our part towards SDG #11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Reminder: Please do not add to many citrus items and NO meat products to these composters. Tend to them daily and bring to the next meeting to be shared with other cubs.

SCOUTING TIP: Put all your items inside a garbage bag, inside your bag, to "waterproof" your contents.

Volunteers

Did you know, all the Scouters in 3rd Kanata are all volunteers? It's true!

We come from different backgrounds but all have a common goal, to help develop well rounded youth in safe and fun adventures.

You don't have to be an "outdoorsy" person to be a volunteer in Scouting. There are lots of areas where we need help which do include Group Scouters (weekly meeting Scouters), but also other areas like Fundraising, Social Media and more.
